When momentous events occur, often the most powerful images are not video, but still pictures. Many television news outlets, including CNN, used montages of still images to covey the overwhelming emotions of the school massacre in Connecticut. Video can be powerful, too, but there is sometime about freezing a moment in time, that allows the viewer to concentrate on the image, to see something that can't se seen in real time.
This example -- aired on CBS before Sunday's football games -- is a good example of how sill images can trump moving pictures for emotional impact.
