LECTURE:  There's an app for that!  Discussion and experimentation with apps and filters that create different picture types including Instagram, Hipstamatic, HDR pro and Panoramas.  Discussion of which apps and filters are suitable for journalism, and which are not.

IN CLASS EXERCISE:  Stitching photos together with Adobe Photoshop to create HDR and Panoramic images, demonstration and practice of both acceptable and unacceptable photo manipulation techniques.  Some sample photos will be provided.
HOMEWORK : Photo Assignment #4: "Sampling of Digital Effects"   1. Shoot and post one HDR picture, using separate images you exposed manually with your camera OR the HDR pro app on your phone.   Be sure to pick a subject that makes use of the ability of High Dynamic Range to handle difficult lighting situation.  2. Shoot and post one panoramic image taken with either the iPhone built-in camera app, OR Photosynth app, OR combine separate images into a panoramic picture using the photomerge capability of Adobe Photoshop.  3. Using a camera app such as Instagram or Hipstamatic provide at least one example of a photo that could be be used in a news story.  Add captions that explain how the picture was suited to the app you used. .

GRADING CRITERIA:
1. Did you post an HDR image that takes advantage of the unique properties of HDR, in that it has an area of low light and bright light that have to be balanced?

2. Did you post a panoramic image that takes advantage of the ability of panoramas to show a wide scene?
3. Did you post an image that used either pre or post-filters, such as Hipstamatic or Instagram in which the filters helped add to the mood or context of the photo?
4. Did you explain in a caption why the image was suited to the app employed? 
5. Were your images well-composed and visually interesting?  (One yes for each photo)

7 - 6 yeses = A
5 - 4 yeses = B
3 -    yeses = C
2 -    yeses = D
1 -    yeses = F
